(IRVINE, Calif.) PLNU Men's Tennis played on Friday in the NCAA West Regional for the third straight year, but the third time was not the charm for the Sea Lions, as third-seeded Point Loma had its season end at the hands of second-seeded Concordia, 4-1.
Â
PLNU nearly took the doubles point, which was decided on Court No. 2, before CUI took a 1-0 lead in the match.
Â
Niclas Goltz and
Nabeel Khan won at No. 3, breaking their opponents' serve twice to lead 4-1 before winning 6-3.
Â
David Fisinger and
Andrew Suver broke serve to go up 5-3 before CUI battled back to tie it 5-5. Suver then won all four points on his serve to put PLNU's No. 2 pairing ahead, 6-5. Suver charged the net for a winner to put the Sea Lions up 0-30 in the next game, and they would've had triple set point at 15-40 if it weren't for an overturned line call that went against Point Loma.
Â
Concordia then went on to win in a tiebreak to claim the doubles point.
Â
Alexander Leischner got PLNU on the board with a dominant victory at No. 1 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1.
Â
Had the doubles point gone the Sea Lions' way, PLNU would've still had a chance late in the match, as
David Fisinger was battling in a third set at No. 4 and
Nabeel Khan was leading on Court No. 6.
Â
Back-to-back service breaks for Fisinger allowed the freshman to overcome a first-set loss and win the second, forcing a third and final stanza.
Â
Khan's big serve clinched him the first set in his singles match before his second set was left unfinished when Concordia clinched the team victory.
Â
Point Loma (13-7 overall) made three straight NCAA West Regional appearances for the first time in program history.
