(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Basketball has announced the addition of
Mason Shifflett as an Assistant Coach ahead of the 2025-26 season.
"Adding Mason to our coaching staff will make a huge impact on our program," Head Coach
Justin Downer said. "His experience at the Division II level at multiple schools in some of the best regions of the country will give our program great national perspective, while adding a crucial piece to our player development model."
Shifflett was a member of the 2024-25 PLNU squad that won the PacWest regular season and tournament titles before reaching the West Regional championship game. He was forced to miss the season because of injury but played an integral role leading from the sideline.
"Being the first former player of any coach on this staff to step into a coaching role alongside them is an honor I carry with deep pride and genuine humility," Shifflett said. "Seeing how hard Coach Downer, Coach McIntosh and Coach Dyck work, as well as their attention to detail, emphasis of growth in every phase of life and commitment to family, will not be taken for granted.
"I cannot overstate the impact they and this program have had on me. Their ability to breathe life into others is something I wake up excited to join them in every single day."
Prior to transferring to Point Loma, Shifflett had a standout playing career at Montevallo, where he played in 72 games and averaged 10.1 points per game. He made 128 3-pointers in his career, while also averaging 4.2 rebounds per contest.
"Mason was a self-made, high IQ, highly skilled player," Downer said. "Typically, players with his resume translate to making a big impact with players right away. We are thrilled with his growth in our program over the last year and are blessed to be able to keep him in the program."
Shifflett is excited to remain on The Point.
"From the moment I stepped onto campus, Point Loma has embraced me as family," Shifflett said. "Even without playing a game here, this community has shown me unwavering support and love. I'm blessed beyond measure to join a school, athletics program and coaching staff that lives out their faith and servant leadership on a daily basis, and I am eager to pour into others the way this place has poured into me."
Point Loma is scheduled to begin its 2025-26 campaign with an exhibition game against Westcliff on Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. in Golden Gym.
