PLNU KEEPS ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET IN WIN OVER REGIS

(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Soccer posted its second straight shutout victory, defeating Regis 1-0 on Saturday at home.

"At the end of the season it's going to be a very good result," Head Coach Phil Wolf said of the win. "Regis is a good team and they posed some problems. I'm really happy to keep a clean sheet and finding a way to score a goal."

Elijah Langford put Point Loma ahead early, converting from the penalty spot in the fifth minute after a Regis handball.

"He's our nine and the guy we want taking the penalties," Wolf said. "I thought he took that fairly well and I was excited to get off to a nice start."

Keoni Young nearly doubled PLNU's lead on the stroke of halftime with a header that bounced off the post and out.

The Sea Lions continued to press forward in search of a second, with Cole Friesen and Frankie Garton forcing saves in the second half.

PLNU earned 10 corner kicks and outshot the Rangers 10-4 overall, but a second goal ultimately wasn't needed as Point Loma held Regis without a shot on target in keeping its second consecutive shutout.

"The one thing I've said to them since the Pomona and San Bern games is you're not a serious team if you can't beat someone 1-0," Wolf said. "We've challenged them to be able to keep clean sheets and not concede, so I think after conceding five in the first two games, it's nice to come back with two clean sheets."

Point Loma (2-1-1 overall) returns home on Thursday to host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1 p.m. on a two-game winning streak.

"Whenever we play inside this Super Region, it's super important that we find as many ways as we can to win," Wolf said. "Today that was maybe a little bit of a different type of way to win, being more solid defensively and having to suffer a little bit in that game, but we're really proud of the performance."
