(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Soccer closed out its non-conference schedule with a 2-0 win over Westmont on Saturday afternoon, its second straight win entering PacWest play.
Emmett Layman got Point Loma off and running in just the third minute with a header off the inside of the left post.
Shawn O'Brien lofted a perfect forward ball to
Zack Mercieca, whose inch-perfect cross found Layman at the back post to give the hosts an early lead.
Elijah Langford then made it 2-0 Sea Lions just before the half, drawing a penalty kick and burying the follow-up after his initial spot kick was saved.
Point Loma went down a man early in the second half but continued to threaten Westmont's goal, outshooting the visitors 12-4 in shots on goal.
Despite the man disadvantage, PLNU managed to control the game in the second half and keep the visitors off the scoresheet.
Jeremy Caringella made four saves in net for his third shutout in his last four matches played, as defenders
Gage Wasserman,
Lisandru Susini,
Zion Yeboah and O'Brien helped the Sea Lions become the first team to hold the Warriors scoreless in a game this season.
Point Loma (4-2-1 overall) concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule on a two-game winning streak.
PLNU will begin PacWest play on Thursday at home against Menlo in a matchup between the top two teams in the conference standings last year. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
