SEA LIONS SWEEP VULCANS IN PACWEST OPENER

(SAN DIEGO) No. 5 PLNU Volleyball opened up PacWest play with a three-set sweep (25-22, 25-16, 25-23) of Hawai'i Hilo on Monday night in Golden Gym.

Abigail Nua, who ranks No. 1 in NCAA Division II in kills per set and points per set, led all players with 22 kills. She came up clutch down the stretch in set three with a pair of kills and a block, as Point Loma scored eight of the final nine points to complete the sweep.

The Sea Lions put together another efficient offensive performance, hitting .358, their second-best attack % of the season and sixth time eclipsing .300 in their past seven matches.

That included .563 in set two, as PLNU committed only one error in each of the first and second sets, while three different Sea Lions served aces in the second stanza.

Hilo battled back to lead 22-17 in the third set before Point Loma surged ahead to win its PacWest opener in sweeping fashion.

PLNU leads all NCAA Division II teams in both kills per set and assists per set this season, as Jill Leslie (9 kills) and Saren Rogers (8 kills) nearly joined Nua in double figures. Sophia Baugh, who is third in NCAA Division II in assists per set, dished out 34 assists.

Macy Reynolds led the defense with 16 digs.

Point Loma (11-1 overall, 1-0 PacWest) will take its nine-match winning streak, including six straight sweeps, onto the road this weekend for three matches – Friday at Dominican (7 p.m.), Saturday at Menlo (3 p.m.) and Monday at Fresno Pacific (5 p.m.).
