SEA LIONS SWEEP ON OPENING NIGHT

(SAN DIEGO) No. 16 PLNU Volleyball nearly squandered a third set lead against Emporia State on Thursday night in Golden Gym.

Abigail Nua wasn't about to let that happen.

Facing set point, the three-time All-American rallied off three straight kills as part of her 19-kill night to finish off Point Loma's 25-17, 25-23, 26-24 sweep in the Sea Lions' season opener.

A pair of 5-0 runs helped PLNU roll in set one, as a pair of Nua blocks helped the Sea Lions lead by as many as 10 in the opening set.

Point Loma then overcame a 5-10 deficit in set two, with back-to-back kills from Ellie Nichols getting the hosts back into it. Nua then pulled PLNU ahead on three separate occasions, including for good at 23-22 before the Sea Lions took a 2-0 lead in the match following a Hornets service error.

The third set was tied at 15-15 before a pair of Jill Leslie kills bookended two Nua service aces that put Point Loma in front, 19-15. However, the visitors fought back to take a 24-23 advantage and nearly force a fourth set, but Nua had different ideas to clinch the Sea Lions' fourth straight victory in season openers.

Leslie tallied nine kills to rank second on the team behind Nua's 19. Sophia Baugh dished out 36 assists, while Macy Reynolds led the defense with 10 digs.

Point Loma (1-0 overall) returns to Golden Gym on Friday to host Northwest Nazarene at 6 p.m.
