(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Soccer fell 3-0 at home to Vanguard on Wednesday afternoon in a battle between the top two teams in the PacWest standings.
Â
Vanguard scored all three of its goals in the first 20-plus minutes, as Point Loma was held scoreless at home for the first time in nearly three years since Nov. 8, 2023 against Westmont.
Â
Trailing by three, the Sea Lions came out with renewed energy in the second half, as
Owen Riecke and
Kaelele Fernandez forced saves in the first few minutes after play resumed.
Â
James Haynes thought he got a goal back for the hosts following a PLNU free kick, when he blasted a left-footed shot into the back of the net from close range but the goal was called offsides.
Â
James Metcalfe later directed a header goalwards and forced a save from the VU goalkeeper.
Â
Point Loma (8-4-3 overall, 5-2 PacWest) hosts Concordia on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. on Senior Day in its final home game of the regular season.
