LEADERBOARD
(NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.) PLNU Women's Golf surged on day two of the PacWest Championships, shooting the best second round of any team on Tuesday to move up a spot into third place.
Point Loma entered the day in fourth, 16 shots back of the lead, but cut that deficit down to just eight going into Wednesday's third and final round.
After carding just three birdies as a team in the opening round, the Sea Lions had five times that number on Tuesday, helping Point Loma improve its score by 17 strokes from one round to the next.
Annika Yturralde recorded five of PLNU's 15 birdies, three of which came on the front-nine, on her way to a second round 73 (+1).
Allie Nguyen also shot a one-over 73, with both Yturralde (T-6th) and Nguyen (T-8th) in the top-10 on the individual leaderboard.
Bella Gunasayan (19th) birdied two of her first three holes, as she and
Avery Sky both carded three birdies on the day to each shoot a two-over 74.
Sky is tied for 20th, along with
Giana Gunasayan (78), as all five Sea Lions are in the top-20.
Nguyen, who leads the tournament with 28 pars, recorded her first birdie of the tournament on the par-four 10th before another birdie on the par-four 16th. Her one-over score on par-four holes is the best among all players.
Yturralde's four-under score on par-five holes leads all competitors after she birdied three of the four par-fives on the day. That included the 495-yard third hole, on which she hit her 81-yard approach shot to within a couple feet for a tap-in birdie.
The highest Sea Lion on the leaderboard gave Point Loma momentum going into the final day after closing out PLNU's second round by draining a 20-foot birdie putt on hole 18 despite the blustery conditions in North Las Vegas on Tuesday afternoon.
Point Loma will tee off in the third and final round on Wednesday at 8:40 a.m.
