(NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.) PLNU Women's Golf nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback at the PacWest Championships, finishing in second place on Wednesday at Aliante GC.
Point Loma finished the opening round in fourth place and 16 shots back of first before entering the final day eight shots back of the lead and in third position.
PLNU managed to crawl its way right back into contention after shooting the best round of any team in each of the final two rounds, with the Sea Lions saving their best round of the tournament for last.
Bella Gunasayan birdied four out of five holes on the front-nine to move PLNU into second on the team leaderboard.
Allie Nguyen then birdied back-to-back holes, reaching the green of the par-five eighth in two as her near eagle then moved the Sea Lions into a tie for first.
Hawai'i Hilo pulled ahead on the back-nine by as many as six shots, but a miraculous par save on the par-four 16th out of a green-side bunker from Gunasayan and a string of three straight birdies from Nguyen brought PLNU back to within a single stroke of the lead.
A birdie on the 18th from
Avery Sky kept the Sea Lions a shot back before Hilo won the conference title by just two shots.
Nguyen and Gunasayan both shot even-par rounds of 72 to lead the team on the day, with
Giana Gunasayan (73) and Sky (75) close behind.
PLNU placed three Sea Lions in the top-10 of the individual leaderboard in
Allie Nguyen (6th),
Annika Yturralde (7th) and
Bella Gunasayan (T-10th).
Point Loma's three top-10 finishers ties its most ever in a single PacWest Championships.
Giana Gunasayan (T-14th) and Sky (T-18th) also finished in the top-20 individually.
Point Loma's runner-up finish ties its second-best performance at the PacWest Championships after also placing second in 2023.
The Sea Lions will now hope for an at-large berth into the NCAA Super Regionals (May 4-6) in Pueblo, Colo.
