HPU HANDS PLNU FIRST PACWEST DEFEAT

(SAN DIEGO) Simon Sagal leveled the score for PLNU Men's Soccer in the second half against Hawai'i Pacific before the Sharks came away with a 2-1 victory over the Sea Lions.

Zack Mercieca and Cole Friesen had goals ruled out for offsides in the first half, during which both teams were given red cards to play with 10 men for the remainder of the game.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, when Point Loma outshot HPU 6-3, the visiting Sharks took the lead early in the second half.

The Sea Lions then equalized from the penalty spot after Inaki Santamarina was brought down in the box, with Sagal burying his spot kick to make it 1-1.

Sagal is now tied for the team lead with four goals of the season.

The visitors then retook their advantage just five minutes later, giving the hosts 20 minutes to find an equalizer.

James Haynes grazed the top of the crossbar from a Mercieca cross, before rattling the bar from a last second corner kick as time expired, with the Sea Lions suffering their first conference loss and first home defeat of the season.

PLNU outshot HPU in the match, 11-7, with a 9-7 advantage in corner kicks.

Point Loma (4-3-3 overall, 1-1 PacWest) returns to the PLNU Soccer Field on Saturday to host Hawai'i Hilo at 2:15 p.m.
