(SAN DIEGO) No. 11 PLNU Volleyball won its second straight match to open up the San Diego Invite, defeating Winona State in four sets (25-22, 26-28, 25-18, 25-13) on Friday night in Golden Gym.
Â
Point Loma dominated for much of the first set before holding off a late Winona State run to take the opening stanza on
Ila Rose's kill.
Â
The Warriors then led set two by as many as eight, only for the Sea Lions to battle back and earn set point at 26-25. However, WSU claimed the next three points to tie the match at 1-1.
Â
PLNU responded, however, with Rose serving back-to-back aces during a 6-0 run that gave Point Loma control of the third, which was clinched on a
Hailey Clark kill.
Â
The Sea Lions then steamrolled in the fourth, scoring the first seven points of the set before holding a 13-1 advantage.
Finn Higginbotham's kill then sealed the victory and improved the tournament hosts to 2-0 in the San Diego Invite.
Â
Rose led all players with 12 kills and five aces, with
Sophia Baugh dishing out 37 assists.
Â
Kyra Miles (five blocks) and
Kira Federico (17 digs) led all players in their respective defensive categories. Baugh (13 digs) and
Jolyna Salas (10 digs) also reached double figures.
Â
Point Loma (3-2 overall) concludes the San Diego Invite on Saturday against Colorado Christian at 2 p.m.
