POINT LOMA BEATS WINONA STATE IN FOUR SETS

(SAN DIEGO) No. 11 PLNU Volleyball won its second straight match to open up the San Diego Invite, defeating Winona State in four sets (25-22, 26-28, 25-18, 25-13) on Friday night in Golden Gym.

Point Loma dominated for much of the first set before holding off a late Winona State run to take the opening stanza on Ila Rose's kill.

The Warriors then led set two by as many as eight, only for the Sea Lions to battle back and earn set point at 26-25. However, WSU claimed the next three points to tie the match at 1-1.

PLNU responded, however, with Rose serving back-to-back aces during a 6-0 run that gave Point Loma control of the third, which was clinched on a Hailey Clark kill.

The Sea Lions then steamrolled in the fourth, scoring the first seven points of the set before holding a 13-1 advantage. Finn Higginbotham's kill then sealed the victory and improved the tournament hosts to 2-0 in the San Diego Invite.

Rose led all players with 12 kills and five aces, with Sophia Baugh dishing out 37 assists.

Kyra Miles (five blocks) and Kira Federico (17 digs) led all players in their respective defensive categories. Baugh (13 digs) and Jolyna Salas (10 digs) also reached double figures.

Point Loma (3-2 overall) concludes the San Diego Invite on Saturday against Colorado Christian at 2 p.m.
