PLNU History
In 1978, Greg Brown became Point Loma Nazarene’s first national champion in the sport of golf when he won the individual crown in Huntsville, AL. Brown had a four-round score of 290 with rounds of 74-71-71-74 at Elkino Lake, a par 72 course that is 6,753 yards in length.
In 1993, Brian Bane became PLNU’s second All-American with a 14th place finish at Sawgrass Valley Course in Ponte Verde, FL.
Point Loma's’ Sheldon Ryan was an Honorable Mention All-American with a 27th place finish in 1994.
Ryan Carr was an Honorable Mention All-American with his 25th place finish in 1997.
Travis Inchcliff then became another Honorable Mention All-American when he tied for 29th place in 1998.
As a junior Josh Colace became the sixth PLNU golfer to earn NAIA All-American status after he tied for 5th place at the national tournament with a four-round total of (71, 73, 71 and 76).
Ethan Potts was an Honorable Mention All-American in 2002 following a 75.69 season average.
In 2002, senior Josh Colace became the first PLNU golfer in school history to earn back-to-back NAIA All-American honors. Colace tied for 12th place with a three-round total of 226 (+10). He had rounds of 76, 78 and 72.
Daniel Horning earned four NAIA honorable selections (2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05).
Chris Hudson was named the Region II Player of the Year and a first team All-American in 2005, positing a 73.51 average.
Joe Prince won the 2006 NAIA National Championship at the Prairie Highlands Golf Course in Olathe, KS. His four round score of 284 with rounds of 69-70-70-75 was four under par to take the title. Prince was only the second PLNU national champion in the sport of golf. He was also a first-team All-American.
Sam Cyr will go down as the best player to wear a PLNU uniform. He earned second team All-American status in 2006 with an 11th place finish and had a 73.52 stroke average for the year. In 2007, Cyr finished second at the NAIA National tournament to garner first team All-American honors. He also recorded a then-best 72.28 season stroke average. Cyr became the third NAIA National Champion from Point Loma Nazarene in 2008. He set another school record with 71.66 per round averag,e. Cyr repeated as national champion in 2009, earned his fourth All-American nod (three first team) and shot 72.09 for the season, second best all-time at PLNU.
In 2008, Brandan Kelley earned second team All-American status. His season average was 74.00. Ryan Ellerbrock was a third-team pick in 2010; he and regional champion Oscar Casillas were named third team All-Americans in 2011. Ellerbrock earned second team status in 2012.
