Ben Rosenthal

10335Ben Rosenthal is back for his third year with the Point Loma baseball coaching staff in 2016. He will serve as the team's hitting coach, in addition to working with the catchers and being heavily involved in recruiting.
 
Last season, Rosenthal helped lead three different Sea Lions to All-PacWest honors, including Anthony Torres earning second team honors as a catcher.  With Rosenthal on the staff last season, PLNU went 33-18 and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA West Regional. The Sea Lions tied for third in the PacWest standings at 19-13 and posted a school-record 17-game winning streak.
 
Rosenthal came to Point Loma after serving one year as the head coach at Mira Mesa High School (2013) and two as the first assistant at Bishop Gorman High School (Las Vegas, Nev.). During his one season at MMHS, Rosenthal led the Marauders into the postseason for the first time since 1994. The team went 22-15 and was a CIF Division I Finalist.
 
During his tenure on the Bishop Gorman coaching staff, the team won a National Championship in 2012 and was a nationally top ranked team in both 2011 and 2012.   Bishop Gorman set a record with its seventh consecutive Nevada state title in 2012.  The previous record of six titles in a row was set by Green Valley High School in the 1990s, where Coach Rosenthal was a high school player during part of the record setting run. Prior to Bishop Gorman, Coach Rosenthal spent one season at Faith Lutheran High School (Las Vegas, NV).
 
Coach Rosenthal began his coaching career in San Diego, working as an Assistant at University City High School under Jeff Dufek. Coach Rosenthal knew he wanted to coach when his playing career was over, so he began gaining experience during the off-seasons of his professional playing career. Coach Rosenthal has been coaching for about 11 years now. He has primarily worked at the high school level, but has also had involvement with college level and youth players. 
 
Growing up in Las Vegas, Coach Rosenthal played at Green Valley High School, which became a top ranked team shortly after it opened in the fall of 1991, and throughout the remainder of the decade. He was a player on the 1996 and 1997 State Championship teams there.
 
Following High School, Coach Rosenthal went on to play Junior College baseball at Riverside City College in Riverside, California. As a sophomore, he was named to the All-Orange Empire Conference First Team. That year, he hit .321 in 44 games with a .503 slugging percentage and .431 on-base percentage with 12 doubles, six home runs, 28 runs scored and 53 runs batted in.  After playing for Riverside City College Coach Rosenthal earned a scholarship to play baseball at San Diego State University.  Due to an injury, unfortunately he did not see much playing time during his two years at SDSU. 
 
After a full recovery and completing his degree, Coach Rosenthal was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to play professionally.  He spent four years playing for the St. Louis Cardinal’s organization and several Independent League Baseball teams. His best year came in 2005, when he hit .281 in 83 games with a .449 slugging percentage and .344 on-base percentage...Had 14 doubles, 11 home runs, 41 runs scored and 47 runs batted in. His baseball career was spent primarily as a catcher, but he also played outfield and first base.
 
Coach Rosenthal earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a supplement in Introductory Sciences from San Diego State University in 2002, and a Master's Degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific in 2008.   He also teaches courses online for Ashford University.
 
Coach Rosenthal resides in the Bay Park area with his wife Katie, daughters Avery, Kennedy and dog Sophey. He enjoys anything outdoors, golf, working out and spending time with his family.
