Geoff McIntosh was promoted to PLNU Men's Basketball Associate Head Coach ahead of the 2024-25 season after one season as an Assistant Coach in 2023-24.
"I feel fortunate to have Geoff by my side,” Head Coach Justin Downer said. “Geoff and I came into coaching together and have leaned on each other through the highs and lows over the past 10-plus years. We are able to add someone to our staff that aligns with our vision for this program and also knows me so well as a coach and a leader."
McIntosh comes from NCAA Division I Cal Baptist, where he has been involved with the basketball program for the past nine years.
"Bringing Geoff to Point Loma will have an immediate impact on our program, athletic department, and university,” Downer said. “His standard of excellence combined with his servant heart is a combination that makes others better daily."
McIntosh is familiar with both NCAA Division II and the PacWest, having played and coach at CBU while the Lancers were a member of the PacWest before its transition to Division I.
He played at Cal State Monterey Bay before finishing up at CBU in 2013-14 while earning a master’s degree.
After serving as a graduate assistant in 2014-15, McIntosh was promoted to assistant coach in 2015-16 and Director of Basketball Operations the following year.
Then since 2017, he has served as an assistant while being tasked with several responsibilities such as individual skill development, in-game strategy and recruiting.
"When it comes to developing young men, Geoff is the complete package,” Downer said. “He is second to none in developing basketball skill, player mentality and teaching the game, but what separates him is how he leads off the floor with a commitment to excellence and a love for the Lord."
McIntosh is excited to continue developing collegiate basketball players, on and off the court, while on The Point.
“Point Loma is a university that consistently demonstrates excellence and fully embodies the mission of helping students become who they are called to be,” McIntosh said. “It is an exceptional school with wonderful people from the administration all the way down. I am overjoyed and honored to join the men’s basketball program and serve our student-athletes.”
PLNU’s newly-hired assistant coach is also looking forward to being reunited with Downer, whom he said people are naturally drawn to.
“I have had the privilege of knowing Coach Downer for over a decade,” McIntosh said. “He is extremely driven and operates with great purpose. One word comes to mind when I think of him as a leader – dynamic.
“I could not be more excited to have the opportunity to lead with Justin and represent the university at the highest level.”
