Jordan Courneya

Associate Athletic Director for Event Operations Jordan Courneya was promoted to Interim Athletic Director in July 2024 following the tragic passing of longtime Athletic Director Ethan Hamilton.

"President-Elect Fulcher and I have been working to provide support and to evaluate the Athletic Department's current needs and how we can provide continuity in the coming academic year," Brower said. "Naming Jordan Courneya as Interim Athletic Director provides that consistency. Jordan has been around our program for two decades and is well respected by coaches, players and staff."

Courneya is entering his 20th year at Point Loma, having spent 14 years on the men's basketball coaching staff and the last five in athletic administration.

While heading event operations, Courneya was the point person at all home athletic events, managing the pregame setup, hospitality of teams, gameday staff, ticketing, live stream, concessions and postgame teardown.

He has also served as the Tournament Director at seven NCAA Regionals and two PacWest Championships.

"PLNU's athletic facilities aren't just my workplace, they're my home," Courneya said. "They're also home to a number of our staff and athletes. We want this place to continue to showcase our amazing talents while being an environment that is welcoming and hospitable to our guests and competitors."

Courneya regularly collaborates with Campus Facilities and IT to improve athletic facilities and technology.

Notable completed projects include upgrading the seating in Golden Gym, the athletics outdoor weight space for student-athletes, the outfield wall padding and graphics in Carroll B. Land Stadium, as well as the PLNU Soccer Field renovation project.

He has also enhanced the live streaming of home athletic events and in collaboration with IT, helped upgrade the WiFi network in Golden Gym.

"Jordan knows this place inside and out," Brower said. "He has worked hard to maintain and improve our facilities which has led to an even better player, coach and guest experience."

During his 14 years coaching men's basketball, including five as associate head coach, PLNU made two trips to the NAIA Tournament and a pair of NCAA West Regional appearances.

In 2007-08, Point Loma advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA Tournament and won a NAIA Tournament game for the first time in over 50 years.

During its transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, PLNU won the NCCAA national title in 2013-14.

Then in 2018-19, Point Loma finished as NCAA DII national runner-up after winning the PacWest regular season, PacWest Tournament and West Region titles.

During Courneya’s time on the bench, the team posted a 248-182 overall mark and reached the conference or regional playoffs in 12 of his 14 seasons.

"I want to ensure that Ethan's vision lives on with strong athletic programs that are Christ-centered and emphasize our athletes' athletic and academic abilities," Courneya said.

Courneya initially transitioned from coaching to athletic administration in April 2019 when he became the Sea Lions' Assistant Athletic Director for Event Operations before being promoted to Associate Athletic Director for Event Operations in the summer of 2023.

Jordan was born in Santa Monica, Calif., where he played high school basketball. He earned a bachelor's in Business Administration in 2002 at UC Riverside and a master's in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in 2005. At UCR, he worked as a graduate assistant for two years. He has also worked as an adjunct professor in the Point Loma Kinesiology Department.

Courneya lives in Chula Vista with wife, Kelsey, and sons Isaac and Tyson. A fan of the Chicago Bulls, Buffalo Bills and the Atlanta Braves, he enjoys playing noon basketball with the PLNU staff and faculty and going to the movies.
