The 2017 season will mark the fourth for Gareth Tomlinson as an assistant coach with the PLNU men's soccer program. His duties with the team include scouting, recruiting, game planning and player development.

In his three seasons with the team the Sea Lions have gone 24-20-9, including winning records in 2015 and 2016, the Sea Lions' first back-to-back winning seasons since 2006 and 2007. In 2016, the Sea Lions went undefeated in their final seven matches of the season to finish 9-5-4 overall, and once again, Point Loma defeated CSU Dominguez Hills to begin their season. He also saw Nico Tagaloa take home NSCAA National Player of the Week honors after his four-goal performance on senior day against Fresno Pacific.
