Shane Peterson

This season marks the 21st year that Shane Peterson has been an assistant or associate head coach with the Sea Lions. He has coached numerous All-Americans during his time with the Sea Lions. Coach Peterson will work primarily with the pole vaulters, high jumpers and javelin throwers.
 
In recent years, he helped Solianna Faapouli rewrite the PLNU record books as she placed her name in the top 3 on three different throws lists, including taking over the top spot in the hammer throw. In 2014, Peterson coached a pair of heptathletes to titles as Emily Loogman won the PacWest Championship and Lindsay Honea won the NCCAA Championship. Last season (2019), he helped guide Freda Kallenberg to the PacWest Field Athlete of the Meet honors at the conference championships and to the prestigious PacWest Field Athlete of the Field award, which is voted on by the conference coaches. Kallenberg scored 39 points at the meet as PLNU placed second with 153 total points.
 
10361Prior to moving into the coaching ranks, Peterson competed four years for PLNU from 1997-00. He was the NAIA national champion for three consecutive years (1998-2000) in the men’s javelin. Peterson also finished second in the decathlon at the NAIA National Championships as a senior in 2000 and was sixth as a sophomore (1998).
 
Peterson is a member of the Point Loma Nazarene Athletic 2008 Hall of Fame class as one of the school's best athletes in the 21st century. Coach Peterson is currently and for the foreseeable future the #2 all-time javelin thrower, #3 Shot putter, #5 discus thrower and #5 decathlete for men in school history. In 2000 Coach Peterson was the eighth best US collegiate javelin thrower in the nation and qualified for the US Olympic trials. Coach Peterson was a model student-athlete during his years 1996-2000 competing for the then Crusaders.
 
He graduated from PLNU in May 2000 with a degree in physical education, emphasis in teaching and coaching. He does many tasks at Point Loma, serving as a teacher, coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. He later earned his master's degree in exercise physiology at Azusa Pacific University.
 
Peterson is a native of Marana, Ariz., (just outside of Tucson) where he attended Marana High School. He is married to PLNU Track & Field alum Kristal (Hoover) and lives in San Diego. The Petersons are proud parents to Ty and Maya.
