Feature story on coach Scott: On the court with coach Jonathan Scott

Jonathan Scott completed his 12th year at the helm of the Point Loma women's volleyball program in 2025, leading the team to the NCAA Division II semifinals for the first time in program history.

Scott led the Sea Lions to the national semis after winning the program's first ever NCAA West Regional and a second PacWest title in three seasons. PLNU was ranked as high as No. 2 in the AVCA Coaches Poll, its highest national ranking in school history.

In 2024, the team posted its best ever winning % (.929) in a season with a 26-2 overall record, which also included its best ever PacWest record (19-1). PLNU also picked up the program's first NCAA postseason victory, defeating Central Washington in the NCAA West Regional.

In 2023, Scott's Sea Lions won their first PacWest championship and made their second-ever NCAA West Regional appearance. The team's 16-0 start to PacWest play was also the best in program history.

PLNU's first PacWest title came off the heels of a second-place PacWest finish in 2022, which was the program's best at the time. That year, the Sea Lions also ranked second in NCAA Division II in blocks/set (2.61).

During his 12 seasons, Scott has led the Sea Lions to a 211-113 record. Scott took the Sea Lions' volleyball program to its first-ever NCAA West Regional appearance in 2015.

Coach Scott has had 14 AVCA All-Americans under his helm, including Abigail Nua, Sophia Baugh and Macy Reynolds in 2025.

Prior to taking over the head coaching job in 2014, Scott served three years as an assistant coach as well as some time as associate head coach with the Sea Lions. During the 2013 season as an assistant coach during Point Loma's last year of transition into NCAA DII membership, Scott played a significant role in the team's march towards the NCCAA regional and national championships. The Sea Lions went 30-7 in 2013, just their third 30-win season in school history. PLNU also placed second in the PacWest with a 16-4 record.

He was awarded an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Thirty Under 30 award as one of the top up-and-coming volleyball coaches under the age of 30 in the country. He was one of just three NCAA Division II coaches to receive the prestigious honor.

Scott comes from the University of Southern California where he assisted with both men’s and women’s squads. During Scott’s tenure at USC, he made it to the NCAA final four three times. The men were runners-up in the 2009 NCAA championships, in 2010 he made it with the women, and most recently with the men in 2011. At the club level, Scott has had many top-10 finishes at the USA Junior National Championships. He currently coaches for Wave Volleyball Club, which is located in San Diego.

Scott also volunteered with the USA Women's National Team during much of the 2009-2012 quadrennial.

Scott was recruited to play at CSU Northridge, but could not compete due to injury. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Long Beach State with a double major in Political Science and Religious Studies. Scott has earned a Master's degree in Ministry from Point Loma.
