PLNU senior goalie Eric Leboffe finished his career in style on Saturday, scoring an important goal as the team wrapped up its season by playing Fresno Pacific to a 2-2 tie.
Leboffe, playing in his final game as a Sea Lion, was given the opportunity to come up from his goalie position and take a penalty kick with the score tied 1-1 early in the second half. He hammered the ball into the left side of the net past the diving keeper to give PLNU a 2-1 lead.
It was a high-intensity game that featured a total of 31 shots, as both teams refused to back down. PLNU struck first just a minute and a half into the game, when Jeff Serbin bent a corner kick into the goal.
The Sunbirds responded with a goal of their own in the 38th minute, when a foul was called in the box that resulted in a penalty kick goal by Vitor Machado.
In the second half it was the Sea Lions benefiting from a similar situation, and the aforementioned penalty kick by Leboffe put the team ahead 2-1. Ten minutes later, FPU struck back as Paul Islas broke away from the defense and found Guilherme Machado for the goal. Sea Lion players and fans called for an offsides, but none was given.
The last 27 minutes of regulation included good opportunities for each squad, but neither was able to capitalize. In the two overtime periods, PLNU took a total of five shots, but were wide by a few inches on their closest opportunity.
PLNU took 16 total shots, five of them on goal, while the Sunbirds took 15 shots and seven on goal. Leboffe made five saves for PLNU in his final game. FPU kept the pressure on all day, getting called offsides 12 times.
The Sea Lions were unable to qualify for the GSAC playoffs, and finish the season with a record of 3-10-2 (2-6-2 GSAC). The Sunbirds (8-6-2, 4-4-2) will qualify for the playoffs, but will travel to a higher seed.
