Sea Lions Block Out Vikings

Campbell sets school record with 11 blocks; team tallies 18 blocks

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO - Andrea Campbell set a school record with 11 blocked shots in PLNU's 72-47 non-conference win against Bethany Lutheran (MN) Monday night in Golden Gym. The Sea Lions blocked 18 shots as a team in the second game of the 2010 Surf N Slam Small College Basketball Tournament. The day's first tilt had George Fox defeating Fairleigh Dickinson 77-48.

Point Loma controlled just about every statistical category against the Vikings: shooting percentage (40-25.8), three pointers (8-3), rebounds (55-39), assists (14-9) and the aforementioned blocks (18-1). The Sea Lions also forced 22 turnovers which led to 20 points.

BLU scored the first points of the game but PLNU had a 13-point lead midway into the first half. The Sea Lions pushed their lead to 20 at the break and Campbell had registered eight blocks. PLNU's advantage swelled to 26 in the second, Loma eventually winning by 25.

Campbell, a 6-2 sophomore forward, blocked three more in the second half before she was replaced late in the contest. Campbell's 11 blocks broke the prior PLNU mark of 10 set twice by Colleen Planeta.

“I've always been a defensive player, it comes naturally to me,” said Campbell who wasn't surprised that the Vikings kept taking shots in the paint. “I think they were trying to get foul calls, but they were all clean.”

Crissa Jackson led the Sea Lions with 21 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Callie Rhoads was next with 20 points while Abby Boorman chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.

Junior guard Brianna Colon returned to the lineup after missing the last few games. She was on the court for 13 minutes and scored six points.

The Vikings had three players with 10 points: Nicole Jones, Anna Cepek and Jessica Englund. Englund pulled in a game-high 11 boards.

The win was the third in a row for PLNU which now stands at 6-4 on the season.

“We knew we had to pick it up,” said Campbell. “We have more potential then we have showed. It's hard because of all the injuries, but we are getting better.”

Bethany Lutheran fell to 3-5.

Point Loma takes on UW-Whitewater Tuesday at 3:00 pm. The Warhawks enter the game with a 7-2 record.
