EL CAJON, Calif. - A 29-13 run by Point Loma Nazarene that covered 20 minutes of the middle of Tuesday's Golden State Athletic Conference tilt lifted the team to a 72-62 triumph at San Diego Christian.
With the win PLNU sits at 8-6 overall, 4-1 in conference play. The Hawks slip to 6-7, 1-4 GSAC.
The Sea Lions won despite the fact that they trailed 34-27 after a very low scoring first half. The two sides combined for just 61 points in the stanza despite solid shooting percentages for each.
What gave the Hawks an early advantage was their ability to sink three pointers, six in the first half. After a few minutes of trading buckets it was treys on three consecutive possessions that enabled SDCC to break a 13-all tie and go up by seven at 12:39. Soon afterwards a three by Tyler Mutton was followed by a bucket by Benji Arvizu which pushed the home lead to 11.
Point Loma managed to stem the Hawk tide and close the deficit to seven at half. Rhett Beal opened the second half with a jumper to resume the Sea Lion comeback.
SDCC, meanwhile, went ice-cold, missing on its first seven attempts of the second. The Hawk slump and six consecutive points by Greg Murray helped Point Loma jump in front of their GSAC rival before the midway point of the half. The Sea Lions never looked back, extending their lead to a game-high 11 points at 7:49.
PLNU outscored SDCC 45-28 in the second. The Green and Gold ended up with a 55.1 shooting percentage and a 23-23 rebound edge. Hancock paced the team with 20 points and nine rebounds. Todd Campbell finished with 14 points with Marek Klassen adding 10.
The Hawks went from a 50 percent shooting average in the first, finished at 41.5 percent in the game. SDCC made just 3-of-12 attempts from beyond the arc in the second. San Diego was led by 14 points from Jason Starr.
PLNU hosts The Master's College Saturday at 7:30 pm.
