box score

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The Sea Lions were beaten 3-0 by NAIA 23rd-ranked Vanguard University Wednesday in an important Golden State Athletic Conference tilt. The game marked the second straight shutout loss for PLNU.

After 35 scoreless minutes, Kevin Cornwall put the host Lions up with a penalty kick goal. In the 57th minute, Chris Popke notched an unassisted goal off a deflection from a Sea Lion defender. Cornwall added another goal in the 65th minute on a bomb from 40 yards out. The goals were Cornwall's sixth and seventh for the season.

The Sea Lions' offensive woes continued, as they were only able to manage five shots during the game, just one of which was on goal. Vanguard, on the other hand, put on a shooting gallery against the Sea Lions with 20 shots, 7 of which were on goal.

The Sea Lions' lone shot on goal came in the 75th minute from senior midfielder Jeff Serbin, but the shot was saved by Lion goalkeeper Cody Adams.

Redshirt sophomore Keith Cline managed four saves on the day for the Sea Lions, but Vanguard's offensive barrage proved to be too much to handle.

The defeat dropped the Sea Lions' record to 7-4-1 overall, 1-3 in the GSAC. With the win, Vanguard improved to 9-4 overall, 3-1 in the GSAC. The Sea Lions now sit eighth in the GSAC standings.

"We got a couple calls that went against us and we made a couple of passes that were bad decisions and led directly to goals," said PLNU coach Tim Hall. "Vanguard is a good team and they play well at home. We didn't get it done today."

The Sea Lions' next game is Saturday Oct. 15 at the Master's College in Santa Clarita. The Mustangs are coming off of a 4-1 blowout win over Hope International. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
