SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene managed to hold off Biola and come away with a 1-0 conference win on Senior Day Saturday, the team's last regular-season home match of the year. The NAIA fourth-ranked Sea Lions are still unbeaten at 15-0-1, 7-0 GSAC.
With the win, and the loss by Westmont today, Point Loma clinched at least a share of its first-ever conference regular season title. No matter what happens over the final two games of the year, the Sea Lions will be the top-seed in the GSAC tournament.
PLNU's long goal came early on. In the tenth minute
Erica Wessels headed a corner kick from
Kallie Caldwell in to the BU net. That would be it as far as the scoring went. The two sides played hard until the final second ticked off the clock, however.
BU had a terrific chance to even the score in the first half but Chrissy King's point-blank shot on goal was turned back on a leaping save from PLNU keeper
Tiffany Kracy.
The final 45 minutes mainly belonged to the visiting Eagles who had at least three chances for goals. Two shots that were made by BU past the Sea Lion defense hit the crossbar and the final opportunity, in the 88th minute, was blocked directly in front of the goal by Loma defender
Madi White.
If not for that save, the game would have moved into overtime. Instead, a minute later the Sea Lions celebrated their third-straight 1-0 triumph.
Kracy made two saves in the game as did her counterpart, Erin Frushon. Both teams took seven shots and both sides took three shots on goal.
The Eagles fell to 8-6 overall, 5-2 GSAC with the loss.
Saturday was Senior Day. PLNU thanked its four seniors: Wessels,
Katie Pedlowe,
Leah Porter and
Lauren Abarca with a brief ceremony during halftime.
PLNU will be on the road for the last two regular-season tilts starting at Hope International at 12:30 pm Wednesday. The Sea Lions will return home to host a first-round playoff game on Tuesday, November 1.
