SAN DIEGO -- Point Loma Nazarene was defeated Saturday afternoon 2-0 by Fresno Pacific University.
In a physical matchup of Golden State Athletic Conference teams, the visiting Sunbirds outshot the Sea Lions by a margin of 18-8.
“I think my boys played really well,” said Coach
Tim Hall. “But we made two really bad decisions that gave up two really bad goals. Those were our fault.”
Paul Islas put the Sunbirds up with a left-footed one-timer from the left side off a cross from Guilherme Machado in the 37th minute. Two minutes later, Islas connected again from the top of the box off a pass from Bruno Pessoa. The goals were Islas' 11th and 12th of the season.
Although they took a tough loss, the Sea Lions said they were overall optimistic about the way they played.
“We played a lot better today,” said junior defender J.J. Reading, a team captain. “We moved the ball… We kept possession for most of the game. I thought we did a good job keeping it in the middle. But we made a couple of mistakes in the back, and it cost us.”
Goalkeeper
Keith Cline, a redshirt sophomore stepping in playing for the injured
Carter Phillips, stopped seven of the nine shots sent on goal by FPU, including several from point-blank range.
The Sea Lion offense, however, sputtered throughout the match, only generating two shots on goal.
The Sea Lions' best opportunity came in the 70th minute. Freshman
Erick Friessen rocketed a shot toward the top of the goal, but Sunbird goalkeeper Steven Waite made an acrobatic leap to deflect it away.
The loss dropped the Sea Lions to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in GSAC play. The Sunbirds improved to 7-3 overall and remain undefeated in GSAC play at 3-0.
Oct. 12, the Sea Lions will play their next game in Costa Mesa against GSAC foe Vanguard University. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
