Vulcans run past Sea Lions, 3-1

[Box score]

SAN DIEGO - Hawaii Hilo scored three second half goals to rally past the Point Loma men's soccer team on Monday (Oct. 8).

Vincent Muscarella scored two goals for the Vulcans' (1-8-1, 1-6-1 PacWest) just five minutes apart in the second half to quickly turn the deficit into a lead.

The first was an equalizer to Daniel ten Bosch's early goal which had put PLNU in front early. James Yamane found Muscarella in the 56th minute on a cross in front of the net on a sliding shot to tie the score at 1-1. Muscarella would register his second goal in the 61st minute on a header off an assist from Aaron Sanchez.

This quick strike in the second half seemed to shock the Sea Lions (2-8-0, 1-7-0 PacWest) who controlled the match throughout much of the opening period.

PLNU held a 1-0 lead after ten Bosch notched his third goal of the season at the 8 minute mark. The freshman from Irvine, Calif., found himself eight yards in front of the goal with the ball and beat one defender, then crossed-up the Vulcans' goalie with a low shot into the right side of the net. The goal broke a streak of 215 scoreless minutes for the Sea Lions, which dated back to their Sept. 29th matchup against Dixie State.

The Sea Lions outshot the Vulcans 7-5 in the opening period and played much of the half on UHH's side of the field, but after halftime Hawaii Hilo seized the momentum and would not relinquish control.

Luis Romero made four saves to lead the Vulcans. Carter Phillips had three saves for the Sea Lions. Ten Bosch, Dylan Wingrove and Erick Friessen all had multiple shots on goal for PLNU.

The PLNU men's soccer team will now prepare to welcome in Chaminade on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 11:00 a.m.
