Sea Lions take down Hawks in four

McCraney's 24 kills leads PLNU

[Box score]

SAN DIEGO-
Point Loma's Delaney McCraney pasted 24 kills, had 15 digs and five service aces leading the Sea Lions to a 25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 25-16 Pacific West Conference volleyball win over Holy Names on Wednesday night in Golden Gymnasium.

The win for the Sea Lions improved their overall record to 10-15 on the season and to 6-9 in the PacWest. Holy Names is now 11-14 in 2012 and is 8-6 in conference play. PLNU closes out its first-ever season in the NCAA Division II conference on Saturday afternoon (1 pm) against Dominican.

McCraney, a sophomore, hit at a blistering .396 clip in posting her second highest kill total on the season. Her previous best was 29 kills in a five-set match against Cal State Dominguez Hills, over two months ago during the first weekend of the season.

"That's what we know Delaney can do," said PLNU head coach Sarah Gustin. "It's nice to see her put it back together here in the last few weeks."

McCraney had plenty of help on the defensive side of things. Senior Nicole Eiler had 26 digs and now needs just 52 more in the final two matches of the season to become Point Loma's all-time leader in that category.

"It was another solid effort tonight by Nicole," Gustin confirmed. "She does such a great job running our defense. When she plays like she did tonight, she really sets the table for everything that we do."

The Sea Lions never trailed in set one (25-21) and battled back from a five-point deficit in set number two to win 26-24. But the Hawks made things interesting by dominating the third set (21-25) before the hosts settled matters in decisive fashion in the fourth by reeling off runs of six and seven consecutive points (25-16).

In addition to McCraney's outstanding numbers, Kelli LeClair added 10 kills and 15 digs, while Natalie Hamill dished 45 assists. Katie Lopez led the Hawks with 11 kills and 14 digs, with Rachel Vartanian adding 10 of each. Tatum Bales had six service aces for Holy Names, who will now finish their first-ever season in the PacWest with matches at California Baptist and Azusa Pacific in the next few days.
