AZUSA, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene could not find their shooting touch in a 65-50 loss to No. 13-ranked Azusa Pacific Tuesday night in the Felix Event Center.
The Sea Lions shot just 36 percent and made only 4-21 three-point attempts. The host Cougars didn't fare much better, shooting only 37 percent, but they did make six threes and had 11 more attempts than did the Sea Lions thanks to a 49-31 rebound advantage.
The loss drops PLNU to 16-11 overall, 7-8 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Both Biola and San Diego Christian won tonight which means that the Sea Lions are all alone in sixth place. With just three games left in the regular season, PLNU will probably be on the road once the GSAC playoffs start.
The Cougars improved to 19-6, 12-3 and are currently tied with Westmont and The Master's for the GSAC lead.
Tuesday's opening half was tight throughout. The biggest lead either team had was four points by Azusa heading into the break.
APU slowly gained control of the game in the second half. The Cougars claimed a double-digit lead at the 11:23 mark when Briana Hall sank a three-pointer. Following a PLNU miss, Hall put in a jumper that gave APU a 12-point advantage.
Sea Lion guard Brianna Colon answered with a layup and a three of her own on consecutive possessions to clip the APU lead to seven.
Crissa Jackson, who struggled offensively Tuesday, collected her first points of the game by making a pair of free throws. The Cougars responded with a 6-0 run that was finally halted by Kiley Berlinski trey. Jackson then made her first shot from the field to make the score 51-45 APU at the five-minute mark.
Azusa pretty much sealed the win, though, when Amber Williams scored four straight points to push the lead back to 10 with fewer than three minutes to play. The Cougars pulled away late and went on to win by 15.
Colon led all players with 19 points. Teammate Nyla Bailey added 17 points in the loss.
Three Cougars scored at least ten points led by an 18-point, 16-rebound effort from Williams. Hall and Roehrkasse each contributed 15 points.
Loma returns home on Saturday where take on The Master's at 5:30 pm and hope to snap a two-game conference skid.
