SAN DIEGO -- Point Loma Nazarene had to make due with just seven players in Golden Gymnasium Saturday evening, with the injury-beset team losing to The Master's College 68-60.
The setback drops PLNU to 16-12 overall and 7-9 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Mustangs, which swept the season series from PLNU, are now 12-16, 5-11 GSAC.
Four Sea Lion players missed the game because of injury, including the GSAC's leader scorer Nyla Bailey, who averages 20 points a game.
Though Point Loma played from behind for much of the GSAC contest, the game was never quite out of reach.
The Mustang's held on to the lead for the first ten minutes of play, but after a few turnovers in a row from TMC and a jump shot from Abby Boorman, the Sea Lions took over, 21-19. They would push that lead to 24-19.
For a solid four minutes, the Mustangs and Sea Lions tangoed between points, but TMC would eventually leave the hardwood at halftime up 34-28. The visitors would never trail again.
The momentum belonged to The Master's over most of the second half, as the Sea Lions were only able to narrow the margin to four points at anytime during the period. After a Brianna Colon layup at 2:02, the score was 64-57 and it was still anyone's game.
A series of Point Loma turnovers and fouls combined with on-point shooting from The Master's ensured that the Mustang's would be victorious. They left the court up 68-60, keeping alive their GSAC tournament hopes while also picking up their first road win of the year.
TMC scored an even 34 points in each half. The team out-rebounded the Sea Lions 39-28--which most likely would have been different had Andrea Campbell, Bailey, and Kiley Berlinski been on the court.
Master's went to the line almost twice as often as PLNU, but barely outshot the Sea Lions in the field, 42.9 percent to PLNU's 41.1 percent.
For the Sea Lions, the loss is a frustrating one that seemed to be out of their control. Boorman and Crissa Jackson still managed to shine in the loss. Boorman recorded 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jackson had 15 points, four rebounds.
TMC's Zoe Scott garnered 17 points while Lena Rivera had 10 points and a huge 18 rebounds.
Point Loma will travel to Irvine to face Concordia University on Tuesday, Feb 21 at 5:30 pm.
