Sea Lions survive Urban Knights, 3-2

Soccer men pick up first PWC win

SAN FRANCISCO--The Point Loma men's soccer team rushed out to a 3-0 lead and then had to hold off a late Academy of Art charge to hold on to a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon at City College of San Francisco.

The victory gave PLNU its first-ever men's soccer win in the Pacific West Conference, evening its league mark at 1-1. The Sea Lions are now 2-2 overall. The Urban Knights, who defeated Azusa Pacific 2-1 on Thursday, are now 1-1 in the PWC and 2-4 overall.

First-year coach Phil Wolf saw his team jump out to a comfortable lead with a trio of goals--one by senior Bobby Ornelas and two by freshman Daniel Ten Bosch. Ornelas kicked things off with a score at 39 minutes and Ten Bosch followed with a counter just two seconds before the end of the half.

Ten Bosch came through again just seven minutes into the second half and it appeared that the Sea Lions were on their way to an easy win. But the hosts came roaring back to nearly match the Sea Lions, threatening to send the match into overtime. Kristof Urbanyi scored at 62 minutes and Jonmundu Gretarsson added another at 69 minutes to pull the Urban Knights within one.

But Point Loma's defense and goalkeeper Carter Phillips stopped the final charge and held on for the win in a emotionally charged match. Academy of Art was flagged with eight yellow cards and one red marker on the day, while PLNU had three yellows and one red.

The Sea Lions will now return home and get ready for Notre Dame de Namur, who they will host next Saturday (Sept. 22) at 11 a.m.
