SAN DIEGO - Jonathan Gonzalez's blast from 12 yards out in the 20th minute for Notre Dame de Namur provided the only score of the match in a tightly contested men's soccer contest on Saturday at the PLNU Soccer field, giving the Argonauts a 1-0 victory over Point Loma.
The victory allowed the visitors to remain tied for the top spot in the Pacific West Conference, improving to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in PWC play. PLNU, fell to 2-3 on the year and is now 1-2 in the conference.
Despite the loss, first-year Sea Lion leader
Phil Wolf felt good about how his team played.
“I thought we played very well,” he said. “We passed well and I felt like the match at the very least was played very evenly. We actually controlled the ball a lot of the time, although we didn't create a ton of scoring chances. They (Argonauts) took advantage of one great opportunity that they had and made the most of it..”
Notre Dame de Namur had eight shots to PLNU's seven and also had more shots on goal (5-2). Jay Tsurouka posted the shutout with two saves, while PLNU goalkeeper
Carter Phillips had four saves in a losing cause.
“We are getting better and better,” Wolf continued. “Our only goal this season is to do just that, get fitter and better. We are progressing, and that is all I can ask for at this point.”
The Sea Lions will have a quick turnaround, hosting Azusa Pacific on Tuesday. Start time is 1:00 p.m.
