FRESNO--John Taylor scored 33 points and his team led from start to finish as host Fresno Pacific topped visiting Point Loma 76-65 during a Wednesday afternoon men's basketball game at the Sundome.
The victory moved the Sunbirds' record to 7-5 on the season and to 2-2 in the Pacific West Conference. Point Loma dropped to 3-7 in 2012-13 and to 0-3 in the PacWest.
Taylor, a 6-1 junior transfer guard from Mott CC (Michigan), hit five three-pointers and got to the free throw line often (12-17). He also had six rebounds. Taylor came into the contest averaging 22.7 points a game.
The Sunbirds jumped out to a 7-0 lead and would go up by as many as 13 digits in the first half, until a late PLNU run and a three-pointer by
Todd Campbell at the halftime buzzer cut the FPU margin to 35-32 at the break.
In the second half, Sea Lion point guard
Taylor Wetherell led a two-minute blitz with a trio of three-pointers, giving PLNU its' first and only lead of the game at 41-40. But the hosts answered with a 6-0 run and would never trail again on their way to the 11-point win.
Wetherell had a season-high 17 points, hitting five of seven trey attempts. Freshman
Trevor Peterson was the only other PLNU player in double figures with 11 points. The Sea Lions hit 11 three-pointers but connected on only 21 of 56 field goal attempts.
Point Loma returns home to host Grand Canyon this Saturday (Jan. 5) in Golden Gymnasium at 3 pm.
