AZUSA, Calif. - Troy Leaf had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Azusa Pacific past the Point Loma men's basketball team, 52-43, on Tuesday (Jan. 8).
The win keeps APU perfect in the Pacific West Conference at 3-0 (6-5 overall). The loss drops PLNU to 3-8 on the season and 0-5 in the PacWest.
The Sea Lions were able to dictate the tempo throughout the game as they held APU 25 points below its season scoring average (76.5 ppg). In the first half the two teams exchanged baskets until a 5-0 spurt gave the Cougars a six-point lead at the half (20-14).
PLNU would get the opening basket of the second period to cut the lead to four points but they would not be able to cut the margin any closer. APU would take a double-figure lead on an 8-0 run later in the period. The Sea Lions would fight back to cut the lead to seven points with 5:57 left, but another 8-0 run by the Cougars ended the hope of a comeback.

Taylor Wetherell all tied for the team lead for Point Loma with eight points apiece. Campbell, Wetherell and Ehlers each added three steals as PLNU had 12 on the night. 
AJ Ussery led the team with eight boards off the bench.
Leaf collected his first career double-double for APU by making 8-of-13 shots from the field and 5-of-6 at the line. Nine of his 10 boards came on the defensive end. BJ Porter also added 13 points for APU.
Point Loma will now return home to host California Baptist in a PacWest matchup on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 4:00 p.m.
