Point Loma picks up point on the road at AAU

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO - The Point Loma men's soccer team fought back from two goals down to earn a point in the Pacific West Conference standings with a 3-3 tie on the road at Academy of Art on Saturday, Oct. 12.

This was the Sea Lions' third tie this year in PacWest play. They are now 5-4-3 on the season and 3-1-3 in the PacWest (12 points). The tie brings AAU (6-4-1, 3-2-1 PacWest) to within two points of PLNU in the PacWest standings.

Point Loma found itself trailing 2-0 late in the first half after AAU punched in goals at the 28th and 33rd minute marks. Nico Tagaloa would bring PLNU within one before the half as he knocked in his fourth goal of the season in the 38th minute. Daniel ten Bosch was credited with the assist. It would be one of the three assists the sophomore from Irvine, Calif., would record during the match as he raised his PacWest-leading season total to nine.

The Sea Lions would tie the match up and take the lead over within a five minute span in the second half. First it was ten Bosch feeding Griffin Fuller who beat the goalie on a 1v1 situation in the 53rd minute for his fifth goal of the season to tie the match at 2-2. Dylan Wingrove then gave PLNU its first lead of the match when he converted on his first goal off the season off a corner kick from ten Bosch in the 57th minute. This gave the Sea Lions the 3-2 lead with exactly 33 minutes left in regulation.

It would not take all that time for AAU to come up with the equalizing goal however. In the 68th minute Jon Eldon, who scored the Urban Knights' first goal of the match, found Thorvaldu Sveinsson on a nice pass over the Sea Lions' keeper for the score. This tied the match at 3-3.

The match went to overtime but neither team could find the net in the extra 20 minutes of play so the match ended in a tie.

PLNU was trailing 13-2 in shots after the first half but responded to outshoot AAU 9-7 in the second half and overtime periods.

"Whenever you are down two goals and can come away with points is quite an accomplishment," said PLNU head coach Phil Wolf. "It was a very good match with two teams going toe-to-toe. They were a better team than us in the first half but Nico's goal gave us life before halftime and the guys responded to play very well in the second half and overtime. There is nothing but positives to take out of this one."

Carter Phillips finished with a match-high six saves for Point Loma. Joshua Leader added two for the Urban Knights.

Point Loma will be off tomorrow before returning to play on Monday against Holy Names at 3:30 p.m.

"This is a big one for us Monday," Wolf added.
