SAN DIEGO -
Griffin Fuller made sure the Point Loma men's soccer team would get the full points in its Pacific West Conference match with Chaminade as he scored two goals within 37 second of each other early in the second half en route to a 4-1 Sea Lions victory.
This was the 11th point for Point Loma (5-3-2, 3-0-2 PacWest) this season in conference play. The loss drops Chaminade to 0-7-2 on the season and to 0-3-0 in the PacWest.
Fuller scored twice and assisted on the Sea Lions' first-half goal to lead the Sea Lions' offense along with
Daniel ten Bosch. Both Fuller's goals came in the 50th minute off assists from ten Bosch. The first extended PLNU's lead to 2-0 when he headed in a cross from ten Bosch's free kick. Ten Bosch sent the ball in from the right side of the box and Fuller rose above the crowd to direct the ball into the net for his third goal of the season.
Just 37 seconds later it was ten Bosch on the attack. He dribbled the ball to the top of the box on the left side and fired a shot towards the net. Fuller streaked into the path of the shot and the ball found his head and was redirected away from the goalie into the right side of the net to extend the Sea Lions' lead to 3-0. It was also ten Bosch's PacWest-leading sixth assist of the season. He also moved into second in the PacWest in points with 14 (four goals, six assists).
It was also Fuller and ten Bosch that connected for Point Loma's first goal of the match, but that time it was Fuller which assisted on the goal to ten Bosch. In the 11th minute Fuller took the ball into the box and was able to drop it off for ten Bosch who took his time and deposited the ball into the top corner for the net for the early 1-0 lead which the Sea Lions would take into the locker room.
The second half would be a completely different story as the Sea Lions clicked on offense with three goals and were able to control the ball for the majority of the final 45 minutes.
Jonathan Tiggs would add his first collegiate goal in the 75th minute to extend Point Loma's lead to 4-0 and it would then hold on for the 4-1 victory.
"We weren't great in the first half," said PLNU head coach
Phil Wolf. "They were sitting off of us and we were running out of ideas. We talked to them at halftime about the importance of moving and thinking quick.
"When a team sits back your mobility must increase and you have to move more to find space," Wolf continued. "You could see the energy level increase right at the start of the second half and the guys were moving well and we were able to go through them a little easier. When the goals come it makes it look easier."
Fuller led Point Loma with five shots as the Sea Lions outshot the Silverswords as a team 22-9.
Carter Phillips and
Carter Rhoad had one save apiece to lead PLNU. Nic Jetter also had a save in the losing effort for Chaminade.
"This team just needs confidence in the final third and to believe that shots are going in," added Wolf. "If we get that I think we are a team that can cause some trouble. But that final third is always the hardest piece so as always it is work in progress."
Coach Wolf was also very happy that his team was able to secure the victory over the Silverswords to improve to 4-1-1 at home this season.
"You have to get full points at home," Wolf explained. "I felt like last match we dropped two points so it was great to walk away with three (points) today as we head into a big match this Saturday."
The PLNU men's soccer team will close out its five-match homestand this Saturday, Oct. 5, against Hawaii Pacific beginning at 1:30 p.m.
