FRESNO, Calif. - The Point Loma men's soccer team lost a high scoring affair with Fresno Pacific on Saturday (Nov. 2) when Alvaro Nogales scored in the 80th minute to lift the Sunbirds over the Sea Lions, 3-2.
Nogales' goal capped off a late comeback by FPU (11-4-1, 8-2 Pacific West Conference) to thwart PLNU's earlier comeback effort. Fresno Pacific jumped out to the early 1-0 lead on Jorge Chedraui's ninth goal of the season in the 21st minute.
Daniel ten Bosch would even up the score at 1-1 for Point Loma (7-7-3, 5-4-3 PacWest) in the 33rd minute when he hit the equalizer on a penalty kick. It was ten Bosch's fifth goal of the season and brings him back into a tie for the team-lead with
Griffin Fuller.
Ten Bosch would also be significant on the Sea Lions' second goal. The score remained 1-1 through the half and up until the 53rd minute when ten Bosch found
Austin Mobley off a corner kick for the score and a 2-1 Sea Lions' lead. It was ten Bosch's PacWest-leading 11th assist of the season and the senior Mobley's first goal.
Point Loma would not have much time to enjoy its lead as FPU's Elijah Gallegos scored on a header just 48 seconds later to tie up the match again, this time at 2-2.
The match would remain tied at 2-2 for the next 26 minutes until Bruno Pessoa connected with Nogales on a touch pass in the 80th minute for the game-winning goal.
With FPU back in front, Point Loma tried to come back but both of its shots in the final 10 minutes were saved by Sunbirds' goalkeeper Fabian Rangel. Rangel finished the match with 11 saves. His counterpart, Point Loma's
Carter Phillips, had seven in the losing effort.
"It was a disappointing result in that we walk away with no points and we probably deserved a bit better," said Point Loma head coach
Phil Wolf. "We had some excellent moments in the attack, but we could not put together enough quality moments to secure any points.
"As always, Fresno Pacific has some fantastic pieces in the attack and that was probably the difference in the game," Wolf added.
Point Loma will now return home with an opportunity to play in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) West Regional. PLNU will host Azusa Pacific in its final regular season contest on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m. The Sea Lions will need to earn a victory or tie against the first-place Cougars (12-4, 8-2 PacWest) in order to finish at .500 or better, a requirement to play in the regional.
"We will have to dust off the past two results and look ahead this week to a massive game on Saturday," Wolf concluded.
