HONOLULU - The Point Loma men's basketball team nearly erased a 20-point halftime deficit but
Oivind Lundestad's and
Taylor Wetherell's game-tying 3-point attempts in the final 17 seconds both drew iron and Chaminade held on for a 62-60 win over the Sea Lions on Wednesday (Feb. 13).
PLNU fell behind by 20 points with 10 minutes and the game looked to be in the bag for the Silverswords (14-8, 11-3 PacWest) but the Sea Lions stormed back to make Chaminade sweat the outcome to the buzzer. After falling behind by 20 on a trey by Kevin Hu, Point Loma scored the 11 straight points over the next two minutes to cut the lead to single-digits.
Chaminade would push the lead back to 12 points with just under six minutes remaining. PLNU's defense stepped up the intensity, holding the Silverswords scoreless until the final seconds of the game. The Sea Lions would tally the next 10 points and cut the lead to two points on a free throw by Lundestad with 49 seconds left.
On the ensuing CU possession, Bennie Murray drew a foul and knocked down one of two free throws to put the Silverswords up three with 27 seconds remaining. This was Chaminade's first points in five and a half minutes.
On its next possession, PLNU would get two looks from long range to tie the game. First Lundestad's shot fell off the rim but
Blair Banker was there to corral the rebound and kick it out to Wetherell for a second chance. Wetherell's 3-point attempt also was off-line, but once again PLNU grabbed the rebound. However, Ussery was unable to convert the extra chance and PLNU was forced to foul as Lee Bailey sealed the game at the line for the Silverswords.
Point Loma (4-18, 1-12 PacWest) got back in the game thanks to a strong effort on defense and on the glass over the final 10 minutes. They forced CU into 10 turnovers over the last 10 minutes while outscoring them 12-2 on second chance points in the second half.
The bench was also a big factor for PLNU as it outscored Chaminade's 33-13. Lundestand helped fuel that effort as he scored a team-best 12 points, including nine in the second half. Ussery added a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with eight points and three steals. Wetherell had five steals.
De'Andre Haskins led CU with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Bailey and Murray added 11 points apiece.
The Hawaiian road trip will conclude for Point Loma on Saturday (Feb. 16) when it faces Hawaii Hilo at 4:30 p.m.
