Box Score
SAN DIEGO - Point Loma goalkeeper
Lupe Herrera had six saves, but Seattle Pacific's offense proved to be too much as the Sea Lions fell 3-0 in their home opener to the Falcons on Saturday (Sept 7).
SPU outshot the Sea Lions 13-5, and held a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal to improve to 1-1-0 on the season.
Despite the loss, which drops the Sea Lions to 0-2 on the season, head coach
Tim Hall was pleased with the way the ladies played.
"The score in no way represents that game," said Hall. "[Seattle Pacific] is very good, and they deserved to win, but I felt like we played with them, and I felt like we had opportunities."
The Falcons opened the scoring up early in the match when Laura Moore scored off a corner kick from Alexa Diaz in the 10th minute.
The Sea Lions' staunch defense held SPU at bay for the rest of the first half and most of the second.
PLNU would get its best opportunity to tie the match in the 59th minute when
Leah Porter's brilliant header came inches from finding the net, but SPU goalie Natalie Harold made a fingertips save. The ball then caromed off the right post and back into the air to Porter but her follow-up shot sailed high over the crossbar ending the scoring threat.
The Falcons struck again in the 70th minute, when Kelly Gould used her head to knock in a cross from Demi Waitley. Then with five minutes to play, Diaz beat Herrera one-on-one to push the score to 3-0.
Hall said that the match provided his team with a foundation they can use for the rest of the season.
"We learned a lot about our team today," Hall explained. "We can play at the highest level in [NCAA Division II]. The score doesn't exemplify the way that game went. I'm happy."
The Sea Lions will return to action Tuesday when they travel up to Los Angeles to take on Cal State LA. The non-conference tilt is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
