PLNU upsets PacWest leaders APU; #BEATAPU

SAN DIEGO - Jordan Ligons came off the bench to score 11 points and lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to a 69-61 upset win over Azusa Pacific on Friday, Jan. 17.

This was the first loss in Pacific West Conference play for Azusa Pacific as it dropped to 9-5 on the season and to 7-1 in conference. With the win PLNU picked up a game in the standings on the conference leaders as it improved to 8-6 on the season and to 6-4 in the PacWest.

Ligons provided the spark the Sea Lions needed. In the first half Point Loma fell behind 24-10 but Ligons hit back-to-back 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to stop the APU run and allow the Sea Lions to tie the game at the half (28-28).

Ligons hit another 3-pointer with 2:08 remaining and Azusa Pacific down just three points to end the comeback efforts by the Cougars.

"When she has gotten her chances Jordan has played really well," said PLNU head coach Bill Westphal. "We took her a chance to put her in at the end and she came through to earn the game ball."

Ligons scored her 11 points in just 15 minutes of play. She was one of four Sea Lions in double-figures. Abby Boorman registered her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Savannah Erskine scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and had five assists. Callie Rhoads scored 10 points and had seven rebounds.

PLNU held the PacWest leaders APU to just .375 percent shooting in the game and outrebounded the Cougars by three (43-40).

Point Loma will go on the road for its next contest. It will travel to California Baptist on Monday, Jan. 20 for a 5:00 p.m. tipoff.
