PLNU hosts pair PacWest games; 80s Night Thursday

THIS WEEK:

The Sea Lions will continue their late season homestand this week against a pair of Pacific West Conference opponents. PLNU will welcome in Dominican (4-14, 4-8 PacWest) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., and conference-leader Academy of Art (13-6, 10-1 PacWest) on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2:00 p.m.

THROWBACK THURSDAY:
Put on your leg warmers and break out the hair spray as PLNU will have a 80s theme night on Thursday, Jan. 30 against Dominican (CA). Fans are encouraged to wear 80s gear and come enjoy the game while listening to the classic hits of the era throughout the contests.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
PLNU enters the game against Dominican (CA) .500 on the season at 8-8 and 6-6 in the PacWest. The Sea Lions will be looking to rebound after back-to-back losses. In their last contest they fell 70-67 to Dixie State as the Red Storm held off two attempts by PLNU in the final 30 seconds to tie or take the lead.

Senior point guard Savannah Erskine is leading the league in both steals (4.0) and assists (5.2). She is also averaging 11.1 ppg and is shooting .822 percent from the free throw line (11th in the PacWest). Fellow senior Abby Boorman is pacing the PacWest with 50 blocks (3.1 bpg). She has 15 more rejections than any other PacWest student-athlete this season. In PacWest play this season, Boorman leads the league in defensive rebounds and is third in overall rebounds. Her 8.2 boards per game this year rank her sixth in the PacWest. Callie Rhoads leads PLNU and ranks sixth in the PacWest with 14.9 points per game. She is sixth in the league in 3-point percentage (.426) and third in 3-point baskets (40).

Defense has been the trademark of the Sea Lions this season. They lead the league in steals (12.2) and blocks (4.7). Opponents are shooting just .375 against PLNU this season, including only .330 percent from behind the 3-point line. Offensively, Point Loma is seventh in the league with 67.3 ppg. It ranks second 3-point percentage (.339) and third in 3-point baskets per game (7.5).

BOORMAN NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - AGAIN:
For the second time this season the Pacific West Conference has selected Abby Boorman for its Hawaii Tourism Authority Defensive Player of the Week honor. This time for the week of Jan. 21-26. Boorman was a force for the Sea Lions, averaging 15.0 points, 14.5 rebounds, 6.0 blocks and 2.5 steals in two games. She had 19 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks against Cal Baptist. She then had 11 points, 16 rebounds and a season-high eight blocks against Dixie State.

A LOOK AT THE PENGUINS:
After starting off the season with 12 straight losses, Dominican has broken that streak and won four of their last six games. They picked up two wins last week by a combined 30 points as they blew out Hawaii Hilo and Chaminade. Salonika Quewon-Owens leads DU with 11.8 ppg and 7.6 rpg. She is averaging 18.0 ppg during the last six contests for the Penguins, including 23 and 19 points, respectively, in the last two wins. As a team, DU is ninth in the PacWest with 61.9 ppg. They are shooting just .359 percent from the field and rank ninth in the conference with nearly 19 turnovers per game.

Recap of PLNU at DU (12/7/2013): Callie Rhoads scored 30 points and the Sea Lions' bench came through with 31 points to lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to a 78-46 win over Dominican (CA) for their first victory in the PacWest this season. The 30 points set a career-high for Rhoads who was 11-of-17 from the field, and 7-of-11 from behind the 3-point line. Erin Andersen and Madison West combined to score 20 of the bench's 30 points.

A LOOK AT THE URBAN KNIGHTS:
AAU is 13-6 on the season and 10-1 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights have won seven of their last eight games, and 11 of their last 13. Their only loss in conference play came in overtime at Holy Names. Krystal Forthan joined the team after the Christmas holidays and is now leading AAU in scoring with 19.5 ppg and rebounding with 11.0 boards. She is joined in the scoring column by Molly O'Brien (10.8), Zoie Sheng (10.7) and Sha'Nice Storey (10.2) who are all averaging double-figures in points. As a team, AAU is second in the PacWest with 76.9 ppg. The Urban Knights lead the league in fewest turnovers (14.4) and are second in rebounding margin (+2.2).

Recap of PLNU at AAU (12/3/2013): Academy of Art edged PLNU in the 2013-14 PacWest opener for both teams. Jasime Guinn scored 13 points to lead five Urban Knights in double-figures in the contest. Savannah Erskine paced PLNU with 18 points, six assists and five steals. AAU used a 17-2 run late in the first half to earn the win as they extended a one-point lead (13-12) into a 16-point advantage (30-14).

NEXT WEEK:
Point Loma will go on the road next week for the second to last time this season. The Sea Lions will face Cal State San Marcos in Oceanside on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 3:00 p.m. They will then travel to Fresno Pacific to face the Sunbirds on Saturday (Feb. 8) at 2:30 p.m.
