Andersen's double-double powers PLNU to win

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Erin Andersen's double-double powered the Point Loma to a 75-46 rout of Dominican (CA) University Thursday (Jan. 30) on 80's Night in Golden Gym.

Andersen finished with game-highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead four Sea Lions in double figures. This was her second double-double of the season. Savannah Erskine nearly notched a double-double of her own with 10 points and a game-high eight assists.

Freshmen Madison West and Sydney Tonack each had their best game as Sea Lions, finished with career highs of 11 and 12 points, respectively.

With the win, PLNU improved to 9-8 on the season and 7-6 in the PacWest Conference. Dominican fell to 4-15 (4-9 PacWest).

The Sea Lions wasted no time taking over the game. They shot out to a 16-2 lead in the first 4:08 of the game behind 10 points from Andersen, eight of which were fast break layups.

Point Loma's defense was the story of the game. PLNU held the Penguins to a frigid 20.3 percent shooting (14-of-69) from the field. The Penguins were ice cold from beyond the arc as well, shooting just 1-of-9 from deep. The Sea Lions had 10 blocks in the game. Abby Boorman added to her PacWest-leading total with seven rejections on the night. She has now recorded multiple blocks in each of her last six games.

With 8:52 left in the first half, DU cut the Sea Lions' lead to 20-12, but that was the closest they'd come the rest of the night. PLNU closed the first half on a run to head into halftime up 38-20.

After the break, Point Loma continued to control the game. With the game already in hand, Head Coach Bill Westphal was able to experiment with a wide array of lineups, and many of the younger Sea Lions got the chance to shine.

A free throw from Jordan Ligons with 2:30 remaining pushed PLNU's lead to 71-40 — their largest of the night — and the Sea Lions swept the season series with the Penguins.

Salonika Quewon-Owens led DU with 12 points and nine rebounds, shooting an impressive 8-10 from the free throw line.

PLNU returns to action Saturday, Feb. 1, when they host PacWest leaders Academy of Art (13-6, 10-1 PacWest). Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
