HILO, Hawaii - The Sea Lions women's basketball team's four-game winning streak was snapped on Monday, Jan. 6 at Hawaii Hilo, 84-67. Kirstie Williams came off the bench to hit seven 3-pointers and score 25 points to lead the Vulcans.
The loss was the first for Point Loma in over a month (Dec. 5 at Holy Names). The Sea Lions are now 6-5 on the season and 4-3 in the Pacific West Conference. The win for UHH lifts it into a tie with Point Loma at sixth place in the PacWest at 4-3 (5-6 overall).
Williams was one of four student-athletes in double-figure points for Hawaii Hilo. Kamie Imai hit 6-of-7 shot to score 15 points while recording seven rebounds. McKenzie Mangino and Danielle Kooyman poured in 12 points each. UHH outrebound PLNU in the game 38-26.
Callie Rhoads led the Sea Lions with 14 points.
Savannah Erskine and
Carlotta Kloppenburg added 10 points apiece.
The game was close early with Hawaii Hilo holding a 19-17 edge with 9:54 remaining in the first half. The Vulcans then made then run outscoring the Sea Lions 14-2 over the next 3:30 minutes to go up by 14 (33-19). At halftime UHH led 50-34.
PLNU chipped away to trim the lead to five points at 63-58 on
Callie Rhoads' jumper with 7:57 remaining. The Vulcans responded with back-to-back treys by Williams and baskets by Mangino and Thea Hanato-Smith to go back in front by 15 (73-58). The Sea Lions would keep fighting but would not get closer than 14 within the final six minutes.
The Sea Lions women's basketball team will continue their road trip on Wednesday against Hawaii Pacific at 6:30 p.m. (PST).
