Sea Lions pick up first home win of 2014

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's soccer team evened their record in the Pacific West Conference with a 3-1 victory over Dominican (CA) on Thursday, Oct. 16.

The win extended the Sea Lions' season-best undefeated streak to four matches as they improved to 3-3-1 in the PacWest (3-7-2 overall), with wins in three during the streak. The loss drops Dominican to 0-11-1 (0-6-0 PacWest).

Matt Rose, Tyler Allen and Mitch Wheelon all scored goals for Point Loma in the Sea Lions' highest scoring game of the season. Rose put PLNU in front in the 28th minute when he received a pass from Eduardo Gallardo on the right side of the field and smashed a shot off his left foot for his third goal of the season.

That lead would not last long as Dominican's Chris Sennes provided the equalizer just six minutes later to tie the match at 1-1.

The score would remain tied until the 63rd minute when Rose took a free kick from the right side of the field about 35 yards out and sent it into the 18-yard box. The ball landed over the scrum without being touched and Tyler Allen redirected the ball into the net for the go-ahead score. It was his first goal of the season, and second of his career. Both goals have been game-winners.

In the 66th minute Mitch Wheelon gave PLNU some insurance on one of the prettiest goals ever scored at the PLNU Soccer Field. Daniel ten Bosch crossed the ball high into Nico Tagaloa on the near side of the box who headed across the box to Wheelon who headed the ball out of the air into the net for a 3-1 Sea Lions' lead. This was his third goal of the season.

"This is a good group (offensively), we just haven't put it together consistently but it isn't for a lack of trying, and it was nice to see some of those end up in the back of the net today," said Point Loma head coach Phil Wolf. "All our combinations and all our possessions have not ended up in the net so to get three goals today means a lot to us."

This was the Sea Lions first home win of the season. They are now 1-2-1 this year at the PLNU Soccer Field.

"It feels like we had been away from home for so long and to get that first result here is a very good feeling," said Wolf.

"We just want to get results at home," added Wolf. "We missed a couple early in the season but we want to make this place a fortress so we have to get results at home. We are just excited at the work Steve Riddle has done on this field and we are just looking forward to getting more opportunities at home."

This was the first match in a five-match homestand for the Point Loma men's soccer team.  Their next match will be Saturday, Oct. 18 vs. Academy of Art at 11:00 a.m.
