Gallardo's golden goal lifts PLNU over NDNU

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma men's soccer team is starting to develop a flair for the dramatic as it won its third straight match in the final minute. Today it was Eddie Gallardo that delivered the golden goal as he converting on a set piece in the final minutes of double overtime the lifted the Sea Lions to a 1-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur.

This was the fifth straight victory for the Sea Lions (6-7-2, 6-3-1 PacWest), and fourth at home. The win moved them into a tie with NDNU (8-6-2, 6-3-1 PacWest) for fourth in the Pacific West Conference with 19 points. PLNU is also undefeated in its last seven matches (six wins).

Just like last Saturday, it was once again the 108th minute in which PLNU finally got on the board. The Sea Lions were pushing up the field in the 107th minute when they were fouled setting up a free kick just outside and to the top right of the 18-yard box. Gallardo and Christopher Tellez each set up behind the ball. Tellez went first as the decoy, and then Gallardo followed with a low rocket of a shot that traveled untouched into the goal on the far side of the net. This was the first career goal for the Point Loma High School native.

Avrin Yakou gave PLNU a chance to get the win as he thwarted multiple Argonauts throughout the match. He made six saves and held NDNU scoreless for his third straight shutout and fourth in his last five matches. Eddie Ortiz had five saves for Notre Dame de Namur.

"I told the team that they have been showing a lot of character by hanging around in these games," said Wolf. "It isn't really pretty right now and we aren't creating a lot of chances in the attacking-third but all you need to do it take one if you can keep a clean sheet; and that is what we have been doing.

"We have a lot of good players that have good qualities," added Wolf. "With Mitch out Eddie stepped up not just with the goal but with a great game. We have great quality; it just took a little to get it going."

PLNU will now prepare to host Holy Names in its final home match of the season. The Sea Lions will honor their two seniors, Matt Rose and Bobby Ornelas, with a ceremony prior to the match which starts at 11:00 a.m.

"I would love it if the guys come into this last match really wanting to bring (our record) to even on the season," said Wolf. "We have had a good little run here but we would love to finish on a great note."
