Men's soccer once again doomed by late goal

Box Score

HILO, Hawaii - A late goal in the 69th minute by Hawaii Hilo's Mike Reckmeyer lifted the Vulcans to a 2-1 win over the Point Loma men's soccer team in a Pacific West Conference showdown on Saturday, Oct. 4.

Hawaii Hilo held the lead for 58 minutes of the match as it scored the first and last goals. The Erik Lund scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute to give the Vulcans the early lead.

Joshua Eusebio would deliver the equalizer for Point Loma in the 41st minute to send the match to halftime tied at 1-1. He received the ball in the box, turned and hammered a shot through the defense and past the goalie for his first career goal.

Reckmeyer posted the game-winning goal on a header after some nifty passing. Eugenio Rhyen found Scott Hill who served it up to Reckmeyer for the game-winner.

The loss was the second straight PacWest road loss for the Sea Lions (0-6-1, 0-3-0 PacWest) who are currently on a four-match road trip to Hawaii. The win allowed the Vulcans (3-5-1, 1-3-0 PacWest) to snap a three-match losing streak and collect three points in the conference standings.

"We are just not good enough in a couple areas to win at this level and it showed tonight," said Point Loma head coach Phil Wolf.

"We played well at times but we couldn't do the things we needed to get results which are those things in the penalty areas," Wolf continued. "The guys have to continue to fight and not give up on the season."

PLNU goal keeper Avrin Yakou made a career-high six saves in the match. The Vulcans used three different goalies in the contest with each playing at least 14 minutes.

The Point Loma men's soccer team will continue its road trip to Hawaii on Monday, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. when it takes on the Sharks of Hawaii Pacific.
