Sea Lions get in win column with victory over HPU

Box Score

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Point Loma men's soccer team is in the win column as they earned a 2-0 victory over Hawaii Pacific on Monday, Oct. 6. Daniel ten Bosch scored a goal and assisted on another to lead PLNU past the Sharks in this Pacific West Conference showdown.

The junior from Irvine, Calif., assisted on Alec Afarian's first career goal in the 7th minute which allowed the Sea Lions (1-7-1, 1-3-0 PacWest) to take some of the pressure off early.

With the lead Point Loma seemed to build confidence as they kept pressure on the Sharks' defense throughout the match en route to turning in one of its best matches of the season. The Sea Lions had a best-high nine shots on goal in the contest (14 total). Matt Rose and Nico Tagaloa had four shots apiece and four other PLNU student-athletes had at least one.

ten Bosch would get his goal in the final 37 seconds of the match after the Sharks goalie was unable to handle a ball in the box and it fell out of his hands only to be deposited in the back of the net by ten Bosch. This was his second goal of the season and he now leads PLNU with five points.

"The conditions for the match were poor today but our guys found a way to grind out the win and that speaks highly of their character," said Point Loma head coach Phil Wolf. "I am very pleased we got this first win today in such tough conditions on the road."

Point Loma goal keeper Avrin Yakou made three saves to record his first career shutout and win. Eduardo Palacios had seven saves in the losing effort for HPU.

The Sea Lions will look to keep their momentum going and start a win streak when they travel to Laie, Hawaii to face BYU-Hawaii on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 3:30 p.m. (PST).

"We would love to build on this result," explained Wolf. "The results have been hard to come by for us. We have had good efforts but not the results. Hopefully this first win can get us on a bit of a roll and we can make something good out of the rest of the season."
