Morgan's near double-double powers PLNU

SAN DIEGO - Junior Morgan dominated inside for the Point Loma men's basketball team in a 62-58 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
 
Morgan scored a game-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to lead PLNU to its third straight win to start the season. He also added three assists, two blocks and a steal.
 
"Junior put us on his back tonight," said Point Loma head coach Bill Carr. "Without him it really would have been a struggle. I am really proud of him. He kept battling against their big guys, and he did a very nice job."
 
Point Loma also got 14 points from Sam Okhotin, who hit his first three 3-pointers and finished 3-for-4 from long range. Marek Klassen added 11 points, four rebounds and five assists.
 
Darnell Martin notched a double-double for the Toros with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
 
PLNU led for much of the game. It took a 26-21 lead into halftime and increased it to as many as 13 points (40-27) with a 14-4 run to start the second half. CSUDH then began to whittle away at the Sea Lions' advantage and even took the lead at 47-46. PLNU then stormed back with a 7-0 run to retake back the lead at 53-47 and then hold on for the 62-58 win.
 
"Cal State Dominguez came in here and played really well," said coach Carr. "They caused us a lot of problems with their length and athleticism, and their execution really bothered us.
 
"In the end we some plays, executed down the stretch and got a win," he continued. "Late in the game we got back to what we were about offensively and defensively."
 
Point Loma will continue its early season homestand this Saturday when it welcomes in the University of Mary for its annual Homecoming game. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
 
"I hope everyone at Homecoming will see a hungry team coming off two really good practices and ready to compete," Carr added.
