Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No place like home! PLNU wins Homecoming 92-75

SAN DIEGO - Six Sea Lions scored in double-figures and the Point Loma men's basketball team never trailed in its 92-75 rout of the University of Mary at Homecoming on Saturday, Nov. 22.

Point Loma (4-0) scored the first six points of the game and never looked back as it built a 13-point lead in the first half and took a 43-31 lead into halftime. After the break, PLNU scored 14 of the first 17 points to extend their lead to 23 and take the wind out of the sails of the Marauders.

"I thought we played like a team tonight," said Point Loma head coach Bill Carr. "We shared the ball well and defensively it was good and it's getting better, but this was a good team win."

Hayden Lescault paced the six Sea Lions in double-figures with 17 points, and also added a game-high six assists. He went 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe while also knocking down two 3-pointers. Sam Okhotin made all four of his 3-point shots to score 12 points. He was matched in the scoring column by Junior Morgan, Judd Welfringer and Zach Burnham. Marek Klassen also added 10 points, including two 3-pointers as he extended his consecutive game streak with a 3-pointer to 33 straight.

The 92 points were a season-best for the Sea Lions, which entered the contest averaging only 61.7 points per game. PLNU shot 57 percent in the first half and 68 percent in the second half to post a season-best 62 percent shooting percentage. This was the best shooting percentage of the season for the Sea Lions and their best since early in the 2013-14 season against Holy Names.

"When you share the ball and make shots it is a lot easier to score. When the ball doesn't stick in anyone's hands tonight and the big guys did a good job in the middle," explained Carr. "We talked about pushing the ball more to explore if we had shots and I thought our point guards did a good job."

Bryan Jefferson led the University of Mary with a double-double, as he scored a game-high 25 points and added 10 rebounds. Damonta Henry also added 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting for the Marauders.

Coach Carr was also very impressed with the energy of this full-capacity crowd in the gym for this Homecoming game.

"I thought the students did a great job in the stands tonight," said Carr. "They were loud and they carried us on the defensive end at times. It was a great environment."

The Sea Lions will now prepare to go on the road for the first time this season when they travel to Cal Poly Pomona next Saturday, Nov. 29 to take on the No. 19 ranked Broncos at 7:00 p.m., in a non-conference contest.

"We will get back to practice on Monday and we will start getting ready for Cal Poly Pomona, who is always a challenge," Carr added.
