Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second half drought spoils Sea Lions' Homecoming

SAN DIEGO - A 10-0 run by UC Colorado Springs to start the second half proved to be the difference in a 66-58 loss for the Point Loma women's basketball team in their annual Homecoming contest (Nov. 22).

The game was tied 38-all at the half but PLNU (1-3) could not find its range or rhythm to start the season half and fell behind 48-38 to the Mountain Lions (3-1) as it went without a basket the first 7:31 of the second half. A Jessica Escorza basket eventually broke the run.

The Sea Lions cut the lead to four points with just less than four minutes left but the Mountain Lions' Brittany Hernandez collected three offensive rebounds in the final three minutes to thwart any hopes of a PLNU comeback.

Escorza was once again an offensive force on the floor for the Sea Lions as she scored 21 points for her third 20-point game this season. Jordan Ligons and Madison West also joined Escorza double-figures with 11 and 13 points, respectively.

In addition to the 10-0 run to start the second half, it was also the rebounding prowess of the Mountain Lions that proved to be a deciding factor in the game. UCCS outrebounded Point Loma 45-32 and outscored the Sea Lions 11-2 on second chance points. Hernandez led the way for UCCS with 21 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive glass. She also scored 13 points for the double-double.

PLNU will return to action next Friday, Nov. 28 when they travel to Los Angeles to play in the CSULA Thanksgiving Classic. The Sea Lions will face Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles.
