SAN DIEGO - Krystal Forthan had 17 points and 16 rebounds to outduel PLNU's
Abby Boorman and help the Pacific West Conference co-leaders prevail over the Point Loma women's basketball team 81-70 on Saturday (Feb. 1).
The loss drops PLNU back to .500 on the season at 9-9 as it remains in sixth place in the PacWest standings at 7-7. The win helped AAU (14-6) keep pace with Azusa Pacific atop the conference standings. Both teams are tied for the PacWest lead at 11-1.
Abby Boorman led Point Loma with 13 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks. This was her fourth double-double in her last five games, and her fifth of the season. The six blocks give her 23 rejections over the Sea Lions' last three contests and she now has a block in all 18 games this season.
Academy of Art was able to speed up the game and get the Sea Lions out of their comfort zone from the start as PLNU never held a lead in the contest. The Urban Knights built a 14 point advantage in the first half and took a four-point lead (42-38) into halftime.
PLNU tied up the game on back-to-back baskets by
Erin Andersen to start the second half, but AAU would not relinquish their lead. PLNU had the game within two points at 55-53 but AAU put together an 18-0 run that stretched over seven minutes to seal the Sea Lions' fate.
Savannah Erskine paced four Sea Lions, including Boorman, in double-figures with 14 points.
Callie Rhoads had 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and
Erin Andersen chipped in with 12 points.
The size of AAU also got to Point Loma as the Urban Knights outrebounded the Sea Lions 66-46 and outscored them 26-14 on second-chance points. PLNU held AAU to just 34.9 percent shooting in the game, but the Urban Knights were able to put up 83 shots, a season-high yielded by the Sea Lions.
Point Loma will look to bounce back from its loss on Wednesday (Feb. 5) when it faces Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference game starting at 3:00 p.m., in Oceanside.
