A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
Point Loma put together an impressive three weeks of play, which included going 5-2, to propel itself into the upper half of the PacWest standings. The Sea Lions are now 15-9 on the season and in seventh place in the conference with a 10-8 record. They currently hold a three-game lead over eighth-place Hawaii Pacific (7-10 PacWest).

Hayden Lescault leads PLNU and ranks sixth in the PacWest with 17.5 ppg. He also ranks fourth in the conference in steals (1.7), 10th in both assists (3.6) and minutes (33.7) while leading the team in each category. He is shooting .514 percent from the field and .743 percent from the free throw line. Junior Morgan has provided PLNU with a solid presence in the paint. He is averaging 13.0 ppg and 6.5 rebounds to rank 20th and 10th in the PacWest, respectively. He is also ranked sixth in the PacWest in shooting percentage at .559. Fellow big man AJ Ussery is third in the league in blocks per game (1.9) and 13th in rebounding (6.5).

Point Loma leads the PacWest in scoring defense, allowing just 69.4 ppg. Their opponents are shooting just .424 percent from the field and .350 from 3-point range (second and fourth in the PacWest, respectively). On offense, PLNU is third in the conference with a .485 field goal percentage, and ranks fourth in assists (14.1) and sixth in 3-pointer percentage (.371).

A LOOK AT THE COUGARS:
Azusa Pacific is 14-9 on the season, 10-7 in the PacWest and 9-3 at home. The Cougars have won four straight games at home including taking down a previously undefeated California Baptist on Jan. 24. Troy Leaf leads APU and ranks fifth in the conference with 17.7 ppg. He is also sixth in assists (4.1) and third in free throw percentage (.845). Sharif Watson ranks fifth in the league with 1.7 blocks per game. As a team, APU is third in the PacWest in both blocks (3.7) and steals (7.3). RECAP OF PLNU VS. APU (1/17/14):
Sharif Watson hit a layup with 0.5 seconds remaining to stun the hometown crowd and lead Azusa Pacific to a 75-74 win over the Point Loma men's basketball team on Friday, Jan. 17.

PLNU had just taken the lead with 9.9 seconds remaining after Hayden Lescault drove and found a cutting Junior Morgan for the go-ahead layup. On the ensuing possession APU's Robert Sandoval penetrated on the right side of the paint. PLNU's defense stopped his momentum to the hoop but Sandoval was able to find Watson coming across the baseline for the basket right before the buzzer.

This capped off a very competitive contest which saw 12 lead changes and eight ties. Point Loma trailed by as many as eight points in the second half and was down by five with 3:39 left before taking the late lead.

Morgan had a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Marek Klassen added 15 points, on five 3-pointers, to go along with six assists. Lescault had 11 points and five assists. AJ Ussery added 10 rebounds to go along with his eight points and five blocks. Troy Leaf led APU with 17 points. Watson had 12 rebounds to go along with his seven points.
